Anthropic spent years telling us their AI was dangerous and they were the responsible ones.

Last Friday at 5:21 PM, the government took them at their word. And switched off Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for every user on the planet. The models had been live for three days.

The reason? A "narrow, non-universal jailbreak" that could surface software vulnerabilities. Anthropic says the same capability exists in GPT-5.5. The Commerce Department provided only verbal evidence. No detailed technical documentation. And yet: hard global shutoff, hundreds of millions of users, gone.

Here's the part that matters if your business runs on a frontier API.

This wasn't a rate limit. It wasn't a deprecation notice with a 90-day runway. A capability your product depends on got made illegal to serve. Overnight, by people you've never met, for reasons that had nothing to do with your business. One report says Amazon's CEO personally flagged concerns to the White House (Anthropic's biggest financial backer, in the room when the call was made). You weren't.

"AI vendor risk" used to mean SLA disputes and surprise price hikes. Now it means a government directive can vaporize your production model on a Friday afternoon and your disaster recovery plan has no page for that.

This is the first time the U.S. government has pulled a live, commercial AI model that people were already using. That's the precedent. Not the drama. Not the irony. The precedent.

So what do you actually do about it?

Own as much of your stack as the job allows. For anything mission-critical, run local or self-hosted weights where the capability fits (and be honest, a 34B model on your hardware is not Fable 5). Keep real provider diversity for everything else so no single vendor is a single point of failure. Build your integrations so swapping a model provider is a configuration change, not a rewrite.

The goal isn't to abandon the cloud. It's to make sure a Friday phone call can't end your week.
